Composer Peter Melnick has released a new single, “Helpless,” the latest preview of his debut album, due in 2027. The song was produced and mixed by Joseph E-Shine, with arrangements and conducting by David Campbell, horns and winds by Steven Becknell, Alan Kaplan and Brad Moller, and lead vocals from New York-based artist Aubrey Haddard.
According to the announcement, Melnick wrote the song early in his first marriage while telling himself he was simply crafting a fictional story about a doomed relationship. He has said the track marks a personal shift after decades composing for film, television and musical theater, moving his own songwriting to the forefront for the first time.
Melnick is a Drama Desk-nominated musical theater composer currently adapting “Snow in August” for Broadway with lyricist Mindi Dickstein and librettist Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. His film and television scoring credits include “L.A. Story,” “The Only Thrill” and “Convicts,” and he is the grandson of composer Richard Rodgers and son of film producer Daniel Melnick.
