Winnipeg drummer, composer and producer Esteban Seunarine has released his third album, “The Expanding Whatever,” on his own label, Rice and Beans, led by the single “Arts & Crafts for Robots.” The album follows the scrapping of a more elaborate, maximalist project earlier this year that Seunarine and collaborator Ben Kensok abandoned after feedback from their team and family; he says he then wrote the new record’s material in about a week.
The band, performing as Esteban Seunarine and The Kind Ghosts, tracked the album in two days at No Fun Club in Winnipeg with engineers Riley Hill and Nika Atefi, recording live off the floor without headphones. The sessions yielded 11 songs, trimmed to 10 during mixing, and the record was mastered by Jon Kaspy in Montreal. The lineup includes saxophonist Ben Kensok, bassist Aria Rempel, pianist Alanna Fast and guitarist Adam Ciric, with guest guitarist Emmanuel Bach appearing on the track “Varanda.”
Seunarine studied jazz performance at Brandon University and has performed alongside artists including Sara Gazarek, Jason Palmer and Luis Deniz, according to the announcement. He is also named as the recipient of the 2026 SABIAN Dom Famularo SEN Mentorship Award. The band is scheduled to perform Nov. 22 at the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg as part of Jazz Winnipeg’s Jazz at Fort Garry series.
