Indie band The Hails have released “Ducks on the Pond,” the final single from their upcoming sophomore album Duckpond, due out October 23 via ONErpm. According to the band, the song is a tongue-in-cheek take on online gambling culture, with lead singer Robbie Kingsley saying the lyrics target the willingness of young men in particular to fall into compulsive gambling habits.
Duckpond was produced by Brandon Shoop, whose credits include Role Model, Dijon and Junior Varsity. The band, whose members are based in Miami, Washington, D.C. and Brooklyn, wrote and recorded much of the album during a summer stay at a rented house in South Florida. Previous singles from the record include “Pack It Up,” “Corruptor,” “Fool” and “Story of You and Me,” each paired with videos the band says build a connected narrative about making art in the modern era.
The Hails begin a run of support dates with Ax and the Hatchetmen this month before launching their own headline Duckpond Tour, which includes stops at Elsewhere in Brooklyn on October 29, Echoplex in Los Angeles on November 14, and shows in their home state of Florida in Miami and Tampa in late November.
