Generative audio company Sonilo has partnered with Musical AI, an attribution and rights management technology firm, to track how licensed music influences AI-generated outputs. Sonilo builds models that generate music and sound effects from video footage or text, and says its systems are built around licensed source material.

Under the partnership, Musical AI’s technology will analyze Sonilo’s generated outputs to measure how individual recordings and compositions contributed to each one. That data is intended to give Sonilo’s licensing partners a basis for accounting for usage and compensating the songwriters, artists and rights holders behind the original works, according to the announcement.

The companies say the collaboration is meant to demonstrate a model for generative music in which licensing, attribution and compensation are integrated from the outset, as the industry continues to work through legal and commercial questions around AI training and output. According to the announcement, Sonilo is finalizing master recording and publishing agreements with major rights organizations and preparing a new music model update.
