More than 70 motorcycles from Billy Joel’s personal collection will be sold without reserve at the inaugural Rétromobile New York Auctions, held by Gooding Christie’s at the Javits Center on November 20-21, according to the auction house. It marks the sale’s first major consignment.
The lineup spans marques including Ducati, BMW, Moto Guzzi, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, Triumph, Honda and Kawasaki. Highlights cited in the announcement include a 1978 Triumph T140 Bonneville, given to Joel by Madison Square Garden to mark his 150th sold-out show there, and a 1982 Ducati 900 Mike Hailwood Replica. Selected pieces will be on view at Christie’s Rockefeller Center from October 8-12 ahead of the sale.
Joel, a six-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, said in the announcement that he has enjoyed building the collection and that it is now someone else’s turn to use it. Proceeds from the auction are intended to benefit the Joel Foundation, according to the release.
