Soundtrap, the cloud-based digital audio workstation, has launched support for third-party effects VST plugins, starting September 28. The feature lets users access professional effects plugins they already own through Soundtrap’s desktop app, then use them across mobile, tablet and web sessions, including in real time within shared projects.

According to the company, the update is aimed at eliminating the traditional back-and-forth of remote production, where collaborators bounce stems and upload or download files rather than working together live. Soundtrap says its desktop app scans a user’s machine for installed VSTs and syncs them to its cloud system, allowing a collaborator without the same plugin to still hear its effect in real time, while those who share a license can jointly edit with it. Support for virtual instrument plugins is planned for later this year.

To mark the launch, Soundtrap is partnering with Antares, maker of Auto-Tune, to offer users a free month of the Auto-Tune plugin. Soundtrap founder and CEO Per Emanuelsson called the update a step change in collaborative music production, while Antares CEO Jeff Wright said the partnership helps more creators use effects like Auto-Tune regardless of location.
