Kids That Fly have released a new single, “Calm Down, Come Down,” inspired by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and its lingering effects on American life. The track precedes the band’s forthcoming album, slated for spring 2027 on Giant Music.
The band says the song, written during a session with producer Tommy English, came together after they decided to write lyrics addressing the JFK assassination amid news coverage of newly released classified files. The lyrics move from Dealey Plaza in 1963 to a present-day American street scene, with a chorus that imagines angels descending to address problems they may have had a hand in creating, according to the band.
Musically, the group cites The Killers and The Strokes as influences on the track, and says it marks the first time their lead singer has used a more operatic vocal approach. The accompanying music video was filmed in New Orleans. Formed at the University of Connecticut, Kids That Fly has grown into a touring alternative rock act signed to Giant Music.
