Los Angeles singer-songwriter Alex Izenberg has released “Boy, You’ll Be a Woman Soon,” the third in a trio of new singles issued through Mexican Summer. The track arrives with a lyric video directed by Isabella Uhl and follows previous singles “Old Gold” and “South California Blues.”
Izenberg describes the song as being about transformation and identity, and the gap between externally imposed expectations and self-discovery. According to the announcement, the single moves toward a brighter, funk-inflected sound that draws on influences including the Beach Boys, Dire Straits and Pink Floyd, a shift from the more atmospheric style of his earlier work.
The new material follows Izenberg’s 2024 album “Alex Izenberg & The Exiles,” produced by Phil Ek, and continues his run of albums for Domino Recording Company. He again worked with musicians from his regular circle of Los Angeles collaborators on the new songs.
