Vancouver-based rapper Alpha Centauri has released his debut album, “The Future Right Now,” via Rogue Planet. The 10-track project follows six previously released singles and was recorded live with an eight-piece band, blending hip-hop with funk, Afrobeat and jazz influences. It was produced by Wes Smith and mixed by Justin Hicks.
Before pursuing music full time, Alpha Centauri trained and worked as a lawyer in Zimbabwe, an experience he draws on directly in the track “Expect Us,” which references the anti-corruption movement led by activist Evan Mawarire. The album also includes “We Rise,” written in 2014, and “Aria’s Lullaby,” a track dedicated to his daughter written before her birth in 2016.
According to the announcement, Alpha Centauri has previously performed alongside Method Man & Redman, Ja Rule, and Cut Chemist of Jurassic 5, and has appeared at festivals including the Calgary Stampede and Vancouver’s Khatsalano Street Party. Vinyl and CD editions of the new album are expected in early 2027, alongside a Canadian tour and potential UK and European dates. The artist is also said to be developing two additional projects, pop act Star Maps and R&B act The Golden Hour Collective, ahead of a planned sophomore album in 2027.
