Winston-Salem artist Clay Howard has released a cover of Tripping Daisy’s 1995 single “I Got A Girl,” the latest preview of his upcoming covers album “Unnecessary Covers,” due November 27 on CD and digital platforms. Howard and longtime producer Joey Barnes, formerly of Daughtry, recorded and performed the track themselves.
According to the announcement, the 11-song album spans six decades of music and came together after Howard became fixated on Neil Sedaka’s “Laughter in the Rain” following Sedaka’s death earlier this year, derailing plans for a new album of original material. Howard says sessions were recorded in stretches between live shows during a summer in which he played more than 50 gigs.
Howard, who has performed in groups including Stratocruiser, Camel City Yacht Club and Blacklight Idols, will mark the album’s release with a show at Ramkat in Winston-Salem on November 27, followed by an official release show at Gas Hill Drinking Room on December 19.
