Gibson has released a limited-edition collection of Flying V guitars marking the 50th anniversary of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, alongside a new line of apparel, accessories and collectibles. The “Flying Five” guitars draw on the Heartbreakers’ logo from the band’s 1976 self-titled debut and come in five gloss nitrocellulose finishes: Gainesville Gold, Graphite Metallic, Heartbreaker Red, Pearl White Metallic and Pelham Blue. According to Gibson, only 50 guitars will be produced in each finish, for a worldwide total of 250.
The instruments feature a mahogany Flying V body and neck, a rosewood fretboard, 70s Tribute humbucker pickups, and a reproduction of Tom Petty’s signature on the headstock, according to the announcement. They are available now through Gibson Garage locations and Gibson.com.
Adria Petty said the Flying V’s role in the band’s onstage imagery made the collaboration a natural fit, while Gibson Chief Marketing Officer Beth Heidt said the collection honors the band’s legacy for longtime fans and new listeners alike. The launch coincides with a broader anniversary campaign from the Tom Petty estate, including the Nov. 6 release of the box set “Origins 1971-1978,” which compiles rare, live and previously unreleased recordings from Petty’s early career.
