INTERCONTINEN7AL, the multinational rock project that describes itself as the first band to record music across all seven continents, has released an acoustic remix of “Lighthouses,” a track originally featured on its 2022 record “Volume 3.” The reworked version replaces the original’s electronic bass line with a slide Drop D acoustic guitar riff, softens the drum programming, and adds a new bass part from Poland-based collaborator Marcin Nawrocki, according to the band.
Bandleader Matt Smith began reworking the song in October 2023 after writing the original in 2021 as a minor-key duet about a fading relationship, with vocals contributed by bandmate Becca Drayer. The project grew out of remote sessions among members of the Maryland band Toast during the pandemic and has since expanded to more than 30 musicians across 15 countries, using BandLab’s collaborative tools to record parts from every continent, including two researchers stationed in Antarctica.
The band says it donates all streaming revenue to humanitarian organizations including Stand Up 2 Cancer, Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders. INTERCONTINEN7AL has no touring plans given its remote, continent-spanning structure.
