The American Federation of Musicians has formally opposed motions by Universal Music Group, Warner Records and Atlantic Recording Corp. to dismiss a lawsuit challenging the labels’ licensing arrangements with AI companies. The filing was submitted Friday to a federal court in New York.
In its opposition, the union argues that recordings featuring its members were used to train or supply AI systems for commercial purposes without proper consent or compensation. The case centers on whether the labels’ deals with AI firms improperly exploited musicians’ recorded performances.
The dispute is part of a broader wave of legal challenges from artists and unions over how major labels are monetizing catalog recordings through AI partnerships, with courts now weighing whether such claims can proceed to trial.
