Berlin-based Indian DJ and producer Pooja B has released a new five-track EP, Nur ich kann mich selbst retten (“Only I can save myself”), via Sources. The record moves away from the dancefloor-oriented techno she is known for, instead exploring ambient and experimental territory, according to the announcement.
The EP was written in three days, which Pooja B says was an exercise in breaking out of a period of creative stagnation by setting self-imposed deadlines and letting go of genre expectations. Tracks draw on tabla, industrial textures and melodic synth work, with spoken-word and field-recording samples woven throughout. “You’re The Sky” incorporates a sample from Davidji and reflects on a breakup, while “Svādhyāya” uses tabla and train sounds to connect to the artist’s Indian heritage. Closing track “Selbst Retten” samples commentary on digital distraction and consumerism.
Pooja B has performed at venues including Berghain, Tresor, RSO and Khidi, and at festivals such as Magnetic Fields and Le Guess Who?. She was selected by Richie Hawtin for his From Our Minds series and has appeared on a compilation curated by Anastasia Kristensen alongside Matrixxman and Vril.
