Production Futures has closed applications for Make Noise, a competition aimed at introducing 12-18 year olds to careers in live event production. The initiative drew applications from groups representing more than 11,000 young people, according to the organisation, a figure CEO Hannah Eakins described as phenomenal for a pilot program with detailed entry criteria.
Funded by LIVE Trust and supported by audio equipment maker Audiotonix, Make Noise launched in April at the Production Futures ON TOUR event at Manchester’s AO Arena. Schools, colleges, youth theatres, charities, home-education groups and community organizations were eligible to apply for one of 20 Audiotonix STEAM DJ Mixer kits, a build-it-yourself two-channel mixer intended to teach the audio engineering principles behind live event technology.
Audiotonix COO Helen Culleton said the response reflects demand for hands-on ways to introduce young people to audio technology careers beyond DJing, while LIVE Trust CEO Jon Collins said the program aims to give young people visibility into overlooked roles in the live music sector. Production Futures and Audiotonix will now review submissions to select the 20 winning groups.
