Victoria, BC-based pop artist Kat Selah has released a new single, “Motivation,” a track built around a driving bassline paired with candid lyrics. According to the announcement, Selah wrote the song in about 20 minutes, working from her MIDI keyboard rather than her usual guitar, drawing on notes accumulated over roughly three turbulent months in her life.
The song’s title refers to what Selah calls her word for alcohol, tied to a period she describes as marked by heavy drinking and difficult relationships. She says writing the track gave her perspective on that stretch, and credits a new ADHD diagnosis, medication and therapy with helping her process the experience. The label says the song contrasts with her most recent single, “Fake A Smile,” written shortly after as her mood shifted.
Selah debuted in 2016 with “Eyes Wide Open” and has since released tracks including “Summertime,” “Trust Issues,” “Five Day Bender,” “Breathing,” “We Both Know,” “Bleeding Hearts” and “Avalon,” along with a feature on Cold Fame’s “Losing Light.”
