Toronto shoegaze project AloneKitty has announced a new album, ‘wide awake,’ and released the lead single “I’m Wide Awake.” The project is led by Michelle K, with the current lineup rounded out by bassist Michael Small and drummer Stefan Loebus.

According to the announcement, the album was written in the aftermath of the deaths of both of Michelle K’s parents while she was working on the songs, though she says it was not conceived as a grief record. The band tracked most of the album live over two days at Union Sound in Toronto, with one track, “Disappointed (For the Last Time),” recorded separately at Harlow Sound with Michelle K playing all instruments.

The record was mixed by Luke Schindler, known for his work with Broken Social Scene and Alexisonfire, and mastered by Slowdive’s Simon Scott, who also helped choose the lead single, the label says. AloneKitty’s prior releases, including ‘sad not sad’ on Mint 400 Records, charted on the NACC 200 college radio chart, according to the announcement. The band has tour dates scheduled in Ontario through January, including a Toronto album release show on November 18.
