Denver indie pop duo Cherokee Social has released “Maya,” a new single frontman Julian Navarro wrote in tribute to his late mother. Navarro, who is Cherokee, says the song reflects on “the full circle of somebody’s life,” built around layered vocal harmonies alongside guitarist Alex Creighton.

According to the band, the track was recorded in a single home-studio session using Ableton with one microphone, a guitar and a bass. Navarro produced the song and handled vocals and bass, with Vince Chiarito mixing and Tyler Lindgren mastering.

Cherokee Social formed when Navarro, previously based in Baltimore, relaunched his solo project as a duo with Creighton after moving to Denver. The pair say they sold out their first headlining Denver show in January 2024 and have since shared bills with Macy Gray and Fitz and the Tantrums. “Maya” arrives amid an ongoing North American tour that wraps with a hometown show at Denver’s Lost Lake on November 20.
