Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has released “That Is Like You,” the fourth single from her forthcoming album “Ruin: It’s Not Just Music,” due October 2 via Someone Special. The track continues what the artist describes as a shift toward breakbeat, jungle and drum and bass influences within her established electronic composition style.
The single follows recent live appearances including Four Tet’s Finsbury Park show in London and Björk’s Iceland Echolalia Festival, and precedes upcoming performances at ATOMIKA Festival in New Mexico, the Warehouse Project in Manchester, and Berlin’s Berghain. According to the announcement, the album marks a departure from Smith’s earlier ambient-leaning work, placing rhythm and physicality more centrally in its composition.
Smith says she set out to make something “confrontational, almost like sonic combat,” describing the album’s concept as rooted in ideas of collapse and reconstruction. Over the past decade she has worked across electronic composition, orchestral work, film scoring and installations, with past collaborators including Patti Smith, Suzanne Ciani, Danny Elfman, Tycho, Caribou and Four Tet.
