Motorbooks, an imprint of Quarto, will publish “PUNK ’77: The Year and Music That Revolutionized Rock” by Martin Popoff on January 12, 2027. The 192-page hardcover traces month by month how punk moved from underground clubs and fanzines into the mainstream during 1977, covering scenes in London, New York, Australia and elsewhere.

According to the publisher, the book draws on interview material with figures connected to the Sex Pistols, the Damned, the Dictators, the Dead Boys, Generation X, the Buzzcocks, the Patti Smith Group and Talking Heads. It also spotlights 25 releases from that year, including records by the Clash, the Ramones, Television, Wire, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, the Saints and Radio Birdman.

Rather than revisiting debates over punk’s origins, the publisher says the book focuses specifically on 1977 as the year the genre expanded into a global phenomenon. It carries a list price of $35.00 USD / $44.99 CAD.
