Toronto jazz vocalist Ori Dagan releases his fifth album, “Live in the Market,” on October 23 via G-THREE Records, followed by a release concert at Toronto’s Heliconian Hall on October 24. The record, Dagan’s first live album, was recorded before an audience at Kensington Sound in Toronto’s Kensington Market and features a trio of Stu Harrison on piano, Brandi Disterheft on bass and Ben Wittman on drums.
The eight-track collection reinterprets jazz standards including “All of Me,” “Autumn Leaves” and “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” drawing on influences from Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington. Dagan said the album is also a tribute to figures who shaped his musical development, including bebop vocalist Sheila Jordan, with whom he recorded a duet in 2017.
Vezi Tayyeb recorded and mixed the album, which was produced by Leonardo Dell’Anno with Greg Gooding as executive producer. Dagan, a Grand Prize winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest who placed as a Rising Male Vocalist in the 2023 DownBeat Critics Poll, will perform the release show with pianist Harrison, bassist Michael Herring and drummer Norbert Botos.
