The sister duo’s brand new LP, ‘Canterbury Girls, ‘ happens Feb. 22.
Songs has long been known to be therapeutic for musicians, helping to provide a path to insights regarding themselves that otherwise might by no means be traveled.
Likewise, listeners can crystalize truths by means of music.
Sometimes, performers can speak to other artists via their creations. And, when the react experiencing that connection is a cousin duo, an already deep relationship can be fortified even further.
For pop/folk/Americana twosome, and siblings,
Lily & Madeleine , music has aided communication that is sometimes elusive during the deepest of relationships.
“Lily and I are so comparable emotionally, and we’ve shared a lot of experiences, that whenever she’ll provide me a song, I pretty much at all times know what it’s about. Or, I could relate very viscerally, ” states Madeleine (the elder of the set by two years; the sisters’ discussed last name: Jurkiewicz).
“I think we find out things about one another. I think we talk to each other via songwriting, ” Lily says.
Referencing a song through the duo’s fourth LP,
Canterbury Girls , due February. 22 on New West Information, Lily says, “Something that I informed Madeleine in ‘Self Care’ is that she has always been into bubble bathrooms and face masks, and getting time for yourself, and she was in a very terrible relationship two years ago, after i wrote the song.
“So, I was trying to tell her that this best thing she could do has been separate herself from that sweetheart and focus on herself. And she completed the song when she had been still dating him and had no clue what I was talking about. But , after that, she figured it out. ”
“I knew deep down the things i needed to do, ” Madeleine states. “But that was a warning through Lily, and I finished it, in some way. ”
“Through the song, even though it’s me composing, there’s some sort of a separation that you could create, ” Lily muses. “It’s a safer place to talk about elements. ”
Canterbury Girls follows Lily & Madeleine’s 2013 eponymous arranged, 2014’s
Fumes and 2016’s
Keep It Together , all of which attained the top 15 on
Billboard ‘s
Americana/Folk Albums chart.
The new work is named after Canterbury Park within Indianapolis, where the duo grew up. Clarifies Lily of the title’s meaning, “When I was, like, between 12 plus 14, I used to spend a lot of time presently there, just thinking about who I wanted to become, as a woman, as an artist, so that as a person. ”
The particular duo’s first two LPs existing a fairly pure folk sound, combining plaintive ballads and jangly uptempo tracks, while

“We got with them right over time, because they’re going to be in such popular, ” says Lily with a giggle.
“We started out composing with them in Nashville, ” provides Madeleine, and the partnership grew in order to production for the new album. “It worked out so well: the two men and the two ladies in the recording studio, with a really talented engineer. It had been kind of effortless. ”
Beyond “Self Care, ” shows of
Canterbury Women include the cinematic “Pachinko Song, ” the swirling “Supernatural Sadness” and the joyous, Motown-reminiscent “Can’t Help the Way I Feel, ” which usually
Billboard is premiering exclusively.
“We were clapping along within the studio, ” Madeleine recalls associated with recording “Feel, ” a music that Tashian conceptualized. “A ’60s female group is undeniably awesome, so I hope we can pull that will off in our music. ”
On Feb. 18, 4 days ahead of the release of
Canterbury Girls , Lily & Madeleine will begin a February-March tour, including dates at Tough Trade NYC in Brooklyn; Luxurious at Old National Centre within Indianapolis; and Bootleg Theater within Los Angeles. Also during the run: the
showcase in the South by Southwest Music Celebration in Austin, Texas, within March.
Says Madeleine of the new set and how the lady and Lily expect its tracks to translate to live shows, “It’s more similar to the styles we pay attention to day-to-day. Also, we wanted to develop something brand new for ourselves the other that our fans hadn’t heard prior to. ”
“I believe folk music is, at the core, about simplicity; simple, relaxing, uncomplicated beauty, so I think it had been the easiest genre for us to get into when we started out, ” Lily states. “But, pop is more complicated, from the production standpoint, so it’s fun in order to challenge ourselves and switch up. ”
