2021 BET Hip Hop Awards Announces Nominees
The 16th Annual Bet Hip Hop ceremony is about to happen next month and the announcement of its nominees finally came this week. As many expected, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion are not just in the list but actually dominate it. Cardi B, who didn’t release any album or EP, has 9 nominations thanks to the one and only collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion for “WAP,” while Megan earned the same number of nominations releasing “Good News” and “Suga” in 2020.
The second most nominated artist in the line is Drake, but not for the “Certified Lover Boy” album. To make it clear, neither Certified Lover Boy or Donda by Kanye West have made the cut in the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards due to its late date release. However, Drake received 8 nominations for the previous drop in 2020, “Laugh Now Cry Later.”

Lil Nas X Announces He’s Pregnant With His Debut Album “MONTERO”
Lil Nas X had a lot of buzz this year because of his song “MONTERO (Call my be your name)” and music video, which has such scenes as him giving a lap dance to a devil, colorful makeup, wigs and outfits. Fans were blown away by the video – more particularly because of the video’s comedic vibe and its significance to the LGBTQ+ community. However, there were also those who didn’t appreciate it at all.
After publishing the video, the rapper made a post on IG explaining its meaning in an open letter, “dear 14 year old Montero, i wrote a song with our name in it. it’s about a guy i met last summer. i know we promised to never come out publicly, i know we promised to never be “that” type of a gay person, i know we promised to die with the secret, but this will open doors for many other queer people to simply exist. you see this is very scary for me, people will be angry, they will say i’m pushing an agenda. but the truth is, i am. the agenda to make people stay the f*ck of other people’s lives and stop dictating who they should be. sending you love from the future.”
“MONTERO (Call me by your name)” was a lead-single for the next album of the artist, as he confirmed it on Sep 1, officially announcing the future release via Instagram.

Album “MONTERO” comes out on September 17, and Lil Nas X can’t wait for his baby to arrive. The usage of the word “baby” isn’t a coincidence – he literally posted a photoshoot of him being pregnant, captioning “SURPRISE! I can’t believe i’m finally announcing this. My little bundle of joy “MONTERO” is due September 17, 2021.”
Can’t wait to hear the baby!
Music Publishing: Prison for an Artist or Skill Training?
Every artist, who decides to take his or her music on a professional level, comes to the point when it is time to dive in and start getting to know the business side of the music industry. And the unavoidable aspect of the field which should be well researched and studied is Music Publishing.
Music Publishing is an essential part of the music industry, which includes administration of copyrights and collecting royalties, finding a place for promotion and licensing, and pitching assigned songs of a songwriter to TV and Movie industries as well as to other artists.
Even though it is well used by established artists and songwriters, there is an opinion that it can be more practical for those who are at the beginning of their music career and who have enough talent to write songs but don’t want to perform it personally or do not have enough finances and resources to push their work.
Music Publishing has its pros and cons, and to decide if it is really something that an artist wants to connect his or her career with, young creatives should know what they are going to deal with. There are six different publishing deals that can be done – however, this article will discuss the ones that involve selling songs through publishers and writing for them, such as co-publishing deals.
Publishing deals allow artists to gain networking and professional connections. Indeed, once an artist starts working with a publishing company, they will look for different ways to promote the artist’s music and where it can have a demand – it will include TV and Movie placements (sync licensing) as well as usage by other artists. Not only will all work will be done by the publisher (which is one of the main reasons to sign a deal), artists will also be able to meet professionals and executives from the TV, Movie, and Music industry, which might be helpful in the future. For example, such artists as Charli XCX, Bebe Rexha, Bruno Mars, and Lady Gaga started their careers from songwriting, creating a number of unforgettable hits and making connections with music executives, which led them to the point where they are today – not only being songwriters but also becoming performing artists on an international level.
Publishers pay upfront. Artists, who sign a publishing deal get paid an upfront advance for their work – they don’t have to wait for royalties, which gives them leverage such as an ability to pay for rent and other living expenses. For some, it allows them to have more freedom to work on their music professionally full time and not just as a hobby. The payments can be monthly or as an upfront advance depending on the terms of the publishing deal.
Artists can have creative freedom. When it comes to singing a contract, an artist accepts certain terms that they are legally responsible for adhering to. For example, he or she will be obligated to write a certain number of songs that need to be delivered to the publisher for each period of the agreement. However, even though there is a responsibility to deliver a specific number of songs the artist will still have the creative freedom to write about whatever they want to write about (within reason) and what mood a song will have.
Publishing deals help artists to master their skills by attending special events such as writing camps and more. When signing a deal with a publisher, an artist agrees to meet specific terms of the agreement – for instance, as referenced earlier in this article, an artist may be required to write 10 songs in 1 year. It is not possible to give up after 2 or 3 finished songs and say, “I changed my mind therefore I am not going to do it anymore” (unless the artist is willing to pay penalties to the publisher or be sued). The deal keeps an artist disciplined by laying out expectations of the number of songs an artist is required to deliver. This helps the publisher to meet their own goals while ensuring that the artist won’t slip away because of lack of interest or inspiration. Moreover, publishers help artists to get creative by organizing songwriting camps – where songwriters, musicians, composers, and producers gather together in a studio for a period of time for one goal – to create final polished creative works in the form of completed songs.
Overall, a music publishing deal can look like an excellent opportunity for an upcoming artist to give a lift to his or her music career. However, it is not as perfect as it sounds when you dive into the details of a publishing agreement.
Firstly, publishing deals are confusing. Publishing deals will customarily have a Minimum Delivery Release Commitment (MDRC). This is a minimum number of songs an artist must deliver to the publisher in order to meet their legal obligations of the deal. It may initially seem fairly straight forward, however it’s not always as simple as it sounds. Usually, a song is created from two parts – the musical arrangement and the lyrics. Therefore, there will be likely be at least two people who worked on a song and the credit will be divided as 50/50. One half to the producer of the musical arrangement and the other half to the songwriter for the lyrics. Since a songwriter’s input (lyrics) is 50% in one song. If this scenario rang true, he or she would technically only deliver 50% of the 10 songs and therefore get credited by the publisher for delivering 5 songs. If this were to be the case, a songwriter would have to write 20 songs to deliver 10 songs. MDRC is a huge red flag for a lot of artists, and it provokes many questions about whether it is fair or taking advantage of artists who are in need. Moreover, some industry groups asked Recording Academy to support them and force publishers to eliminate this term from standard deals.
Secondly, even though the publishing companies pay artists an upfront advance for their work, it will make its money back from an artist’s royalties and more if a song is successful. The moment a song is released, the songwriter won’t receive any royalties until the publishing company recoups the amount of money they paid the artist as an upfront advance. Only until after the publisher’s expenses are paid will they then split the revenue of the publishing royalties generated by a song (customarily a publisher takes 50%), which is paid from the artist’s publishing income.
Thirdly, an artist typically maintains creative freedom until it no longer aligns with the publisher’s vision. Since traditionally a publisher and an artist split a songs’ income 50/50, the publisher has a right to ask an artist to rewrite a song or make changes.
Also, if a songwriter’s initial plan is to become a performing artist, he or she has to realize that signing a publishing deal with the hope of making connections that eventually will lead to launching an artist career may not be the best path. It takes a lot of pressure to be able to commit to a publishing deal while carving out time to develop yourself as an artist. Sooner or later the commitment to the publishing deal can outweigh everything else because it makes you money. Instead of wasting time on something that isn’t a priority, it is better to focus on the main goal to position yourself as a recording and touring artist. A publishing deal can be a double-edged sword and has helped many artists to launch their careers, and has stifled many from pursuing their dreams to be a recording artist.
To sum it up, Music Publishing is a great tool for upcoming artists to put some quick cash in their pocket, grow professionally, train their skills, network, and connect with other creators and music executives for future opportunities. They may even hit it big financially if their publishing company does a great job of exploiting their songs or if a song becomes a hit. On the other hand, when considering the fact that publishers take an average of 50% of an artist’s publishing income while requiring the artist to be “songwriting machine” with MDRCs, it may look to some artists like they are locking themselves into a songwriting prison.

Kanye’s “Donda” Has Finally Arrived – But Not How He Hoped It Would
Kanye West’s new album “Donda”, which was postponed for weeks, finally got released on Sunday, Aug 29. However, it didn’t go as the rapper wanted it to.
On Aug 25, Kanye had another release party in Chicago, where people could listen to the latest versions of the songs included in the album. And as everybody noticed, the significant changes were made in the song “Jail” – instead of featuring Jay-Z, it was with DaBaby (who also showed up to the listening party). The situation created many questions on the internet (which is not surprising), due to the recent scandal around the “Rockstar” rapper and the fact that he replaced such a legend as Jay-Z. Eventually, the second version of the song didn’t make it to the released album.
The reason why the DaBaby version has been cut is because of his manager, who didn’t clear DaBaby’s verse, and that’s why the whole project was delayed as well. However, after an hour since the album appeared on all DSPs, the “Jail 2” with DaBaby showed up in it. How his manager did it no one knows, but it’s living and breathing and available everywhere now.
But the most interesting part of the story is that after the release of the album, Kanye shared a post on Instagram saying, “UNIVERSAL PUT MY ALBUM OUT WITHOUT MY APPROVAL AND THEY BLOCKED JAIL 2 FROM BEING ON THE ALBUM.”
According to the latest interactions between the artists, Kanye planned to release his album on the same day with Drake, who is about to introduce the “Certified Lover Boy” album. The fight between them started years ago, but a new wave of disses started a few weeks ago, when one member of Kanye’s team posted a tweet saying that they are looking for Drake’s release date. The other side didn’t wait for long to respond, that ended up with Drake dissing Kanye on a new song “Betrayal” with Trippie Redd and announcing his plans to present a new album on Sep, 3. Moreover, Complex states that Drake’s fans vandalized Kanye’s old house, which proves that the “beef” between them is real.
This makes total sense why Kanye made this post on Instagram, explaining why his album came out so suddenly.
Atlantic Records Recording Artist Jax Strikes a Classic Chord With Latest Single Release “Like My Father”
While the music industry has been adjusting to the “new normal” in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, recording and touring artists have been using this downtime (from tours and other live events) to connect with their fans on a more personal level than ever before. There has also been an uprising of a handful of music industry pioneers birthed out of the chaos and adversity that has plagued everyone on a global scale regardless of their race, religion, age, or creed. Recording artist and social media sensation Jax is one of those music industry pioneers who has quickly garnered a massive following online with over 700 million views and 7 million dedicated followers on her TikTok account alone since the start of the quarantine last year.
If the staggering numbers on TikTok wasn’t impressive enough, the latest release of Jax’s single “Like My Father” has received over 45 million views as verified by the leading music industry song registration and protection platform www.VeriSong.com. The song’s astounding success can be attributed in part to her first-hand experience seeing how her father has shown his love towards her mother throughout her life. The song is filled with deeply moving lyrics coupled with an emotionally evocative piano melody and chord progression that have struck a positive chord with music lovers and critics alike.
MIW was able to sit down with the multi-talented and incredibly down to earth Jax to discuss the success of her newly released single and to learn more about what makes her “Tik” when it comes to her family, music career, and newfound success.
MIW: Anyone paying attention to social media or watched shows like The Ellen DeGeneres Show or Access Hollywood has become familiar with you and your music. What most people don’t know is that you’ve been working on your music career for a very long time, even before going viral on social media or being interviewed on various television networks. Can you take our readers a little further back in your music career before you became a household name?
Jax: First, I’m humbled that you’d even say something like that. I’m extremely grateful that I’m able to create music that people enjoy and can relate to. Before all of this I was playing in pop-punk bands and playing on the Warped Tour, Bamboozle Tour, and anywhere else we could play. I was fortunate enough to be able to open for acts like Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers, and Ke$ha. What a lot of people don’t realize is that it’s not as glamorous as it all sounds. I remember one time during the Jonas Brothers tour we ended up having to set up and play on the back of a semi-truck. We just did what we had to do. I’ve been on stage pretty much my entire life – I’m an emo kid at heart and I’m a sucker for the garage band attitude. Now that I look back at those times, it really toughened me up for this industry and I’m thankful for all those experiences.
MIW: When did you realize that you had a passion for music and entertainment?
Jax: I was a skater kid growing up in New York and pretty much as far as I can remember I was always dancing around and writing songs. I wrote my first song when I was around 10 or 11 years old. I loved to write songs that would make my family and cousins laugh and I even organized plays at our family gatherings. I remember dancing around and acting like a crazy person. As I got older, I was just trying to figure things out – I explored theater, music, and songwriting. I had a piano in my room and was always writing songs.

MIW: Most people don’t know that you landed a publishing deal early on in your career and wrote songs for artists like Paris Hilton, Weezer and Big Freedia. Can you tell us a little more about that?
Jax: Yes, I went out to LA and signed a publishing deal and had a lot of fun writing songs with some amazingly talented people. It was a great experience and I loved collaborating with them. I was working my butt off 6-7 days a week as a songwriter while also working on my own music and performing. When Covid hit, the studios locked down completely, so I was kind of forced to start focusing on my own stuff and posting it on social media.
MIW: Take our readers back to the moment you created the TikTok video “Stacy’s Mom’s Perspective.” How did that come about and what was going through your mind at the time?
Jax: It was kind of crazy, really. I had been uploading content on TikTok that was a little more serious and overproduced, getting only a few hundred views at a time. I finally said, “screw it, I’m just going to be myself!” I told my boyfriend “This sucks! I’m going to go do something stupid, just give me a minute and I’ll be right back.” That’s when I put a towel on my head and recorded “Stacy’s Mom’s Perspective.” I went to bed with around 1,000 views and woke up with over 1 million views. It was a crazy and surreal experience.
MIW: Since then you’ve collaborated and written songs with Natasha Bedingfield and had several parodies go viral like “Sk8ter Boi & Avril Lavigne 18 Years Later,” “From The Kid I Babysit’s Perspective,” and “90s Kids,” that featured Patrick Renna (The Sandlot). You were also signed to Atlantic Records and released two wildly successful singles “Ring Pop” and “90s Kids” that earned you a spot on Sirius XM’s “Artists to Watch” list in June 2021.
Jax: Whoa, you guys have done your homework…lol!
MIW: We wanted to give a brief history to catch our readers up on your most recent single, “Like My Father” that you recently released in June that currently has over 48 million views on TikTok. Can you tell us a little about why you wrote the song and what the success of this latest single means to you?
Jax: I really wanted to tell the story of the relationship between my parents that made me who I am today and the type of man I look for in my life. It’s such a special feeling when something that means so much to you connects with a lot of other people. It meant so much to my parents too, I just wanted to honor them and their love for each other. Their reaction to the song when I played it for them was priceless.
MIW: The music video is beautifully done, and it was such a nice touch to use your parents in the video to play themselves. What was that experience like – directing a video with your parents?
Jax: Thank you so much! That was my first time directing a video. It was a learning experience and seeing it come to life was crazy. I remember when I was directing the dance scene – my poor mom fell and got injured. Directing was a lot harder than I thought it would be. But I was super proud of the final result. To this day, one of my favorite things is seeing people around the world duet the video with their families. My parents and I will watch them and just cry because they are so touching. It’s an honor to be able to help others express their love story.
MIW: Your parents seem to be amazing people with an incredible love story. Was the songwriting process of this song different from writing your other songs?
Jax: This song was one of the easiest songs for me to write. It’s a true story of their lives. My dad is an incredible man and has always been expressive in his love for my mom. Their love is a romantic kind of love. They are the first ones to jump on a dance floor, they cook dinner for each other, they go on date nights, and I could go on about how special their relationship is. I’m looking forward to experiencing that kind of love as well.

MIW: Where can we see you perform “Like My Father” live and in-person?
Jax: I’ll be performing at a couple of benefit concerts in honor of my father and in remembrance of the 20th Anniversary of September 11th. My dad is a retired NYC firefighter and was injured at Ground Zero on 9/11. I’ve been supporting Tunnel To Towers which is one of my favorite foundations and I’ve been supporting them for years. Steven Siller was a Brooklyn Firefighter who got word over his scanner after his shift ended that a plane had hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center. He drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it was closed for security reasons. He strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave his life while saving others. The foundation honors Stephen and his sacrifice in addition to honoring our military and first responders who continue to make sacrifices for our safety and freedoms.
MIW: That’s an incredible story. Where can our readers learn more about Tunnel To Towers and show their support?
Jax: They can go to https://t2t.org/ to learn more and help out in so many ways – from volunteering, to donating, and even starting a run or a climb in their area. It’s a great organization that is near and dear to my heart.
MIW: How can our readers stream or download “Like My Father?”
Jax: They can go to this link to stream or download the song:
https://jax.lnk.to/LikeMyFather
MIW: Where is the best place for our readers to connect with you on social media?
Jax: The easiest way to connect with me is through my Instagram or TikTok:
