Elyse Williams Hits “The Next Level” With a Sound That’s “Out of this World”

Signed by Disney music producer, Andrew Lane, Elyse Williams has been gaining notoriety since she was thirteen with her performances in local school theatrical productions. Lane, the power behind High School Musical, Hannah Montana, Disneymania 4, and Manny Fresh, has stood by Williams along her journey. Later that year, Williams was selected out of 18,000 applicants to attend and sing at Carnegie Hall’s Honors Performance in New York City. When Lane first discovered Williams and signed her in 2017, they went straight to work, producing her first single, “Well Played,” which was released in March of last year. This was quickly followed by the release of “Girls Talk Too Much,” “Lips Like Poison,” and several cover songs. In September of last year, Williams recorded backup vocals for Paula Abdul’s 2018 tour, “Straight Up Paula!,” and is currently working on the release of her first EP, “Well Played.” William’s latest project was writing a good majority of the summer’s newest independent film, “Next Level,” a summertime teen musical comedy.

Music Industry Weekly – Summertime Teen Musical Comedy “Next Level”
Music Industry Weekly spoke with the film’s songwriters, Elyse Williams (ELYSE), about what listeners should take away from the summertime teen musical comedy.

Taking Music to the ‘Next Level’

Already available to the public, ‘Next Level,’ is a song-and-dance drama about a summer camp for teen enthusiasts of the show business. Former Dance Moms star, Chloe Lukasiak portrays the film’s main character, Jasmine Joel. While Lukasiak isn’t a victim of bullying, Lauren Orlando’s character, Kelly, is. Lukasiak spoke with Hollywood Life about why she’s glad the film addresses the important issue of bullying. Music Industry Weekly: What would you consider to be your favorite song you wrote for “Next Level?” ELYSE: My favorite song I wrote was probably “Who I Am” which is sung by Brooke Butler, who plays Becky in the film. I received  a piece of the script where Becky is trying to figure who she is as a person and as an artist and what she wants in life. After reading about her character I tried to think to think about of how she would be feeling, and what might be going on in her head as she discovers who and what she really wants to be. MIW: The film has its own official theme song of the same name. Can you explain the meaning behind the song “Next Level” which you also wrote? ELYSE:  At first I thought the script for Next Level was about these kids and teens going to a performing arts camp to try and become the “Miss Next”. As I read the script though I realized Next Level was more than that.  It’s about people working hard for what they want to accomplish in life and the effort, desire, and hard work needed to reach that next level of their journey. So the theme song, “Next Level” is all about what someone is willing and wanting to do to make it as a singer, dancer, performer, whatever it may be. It’s about what you have to do to make it and how you have to push yourself and ultimately asking if you’ve really got what it takes to be next level. MIW: How did you come to write the song? What went into the process? ELYSE: This was the first time I have written for a film or movie. I was given a track for the title song, the name of the movie, and a few pieces of the script by its music supervisor, Andrew Lane. As an artist I write my own songs and I had written some songs for other vocal artist of Andrew’s, so he gave me this amazing opportunity to write the title song. After reading the script, thinking about the title Next Level, and listening to the sound track, I just started writing. I think I actually wrote the whole song in about an hour and was then asked to record a demo of it. I later found out they liked it so much that they wanted to sing it for the movie as well. I was so excited, and yet humbled that I was given this amazing opportunity.
MIW: What do you want fans to take away from the soundtrack? ELYSE: I really hope that fans can take away something personal from the soundtrack. Even though these songs were written for the specific characters in the movie, I believe they can relate it to anyone trying to discover who they are as a person and pursuing their own life goals. I hope they can connect to something in every song, whether it’s a lyric, something in the music, and/or a character in the movie. MIW: From a recording artist’s standpoint, what is most exciting to you about the film and soundtrack’s release? ELYSE: I think the most excited thing for me as a song writer was how the girl’s took the songs I wrote for their characters and made it their own. I liked how they personalized the song with their own artistic styles, emotions, and just how they chose to bring the songs to life in their own way!

Taking Her Voice to the Next Dimension

While taking her voice to the “Next Level,” she also found a new plateau to voice her song that’s out of this world.

Cade Foehner Releases New Single “Baby, Let’s Do This”

0

Season 16 of American Idol’s Cade Foehner talks with MIW about life, love, and his new single that will be released on all platforms September 25th, 2019.

Fans of the hit reality show American Idol already know that Cade and Gabby met each other and fell in love in front of millions of viewers worldwide. Those paying close attention to music industry news also know that they were recently engaged. Even though the dynamic duo is literally a match made in heaven, they have both been constantly traveling on their own tours since the show ended. Cade tells MIW that his deep love for Gabby continues to grow even though they are pulled in many different directions due to their busy careers as recording and touring artists. MIW was able to get Cade to slow down enough to give us the scoop on what’s been going on in his life lately.

MIW: Congratulations on your recent engagement to Gabby Barrett. So, how does it feel to finally be engaged?

Cade: THE ANTICIPATION IS KILLING ME! I am SO ready to be married. Just to think I ever was without her blows my mind. I am figuring out more and more every day how much she was truly made for me.

MIW: You and Gabby already dished on your romantic proposal in a March Exclusive Interview with People.com. What was it like planning to pop the big question? Were you nervous at all?

Cade: The planning was very impromptu. I quite literally decided to do it 2 days before it happened. I had bought the ring several weeks before and didn’t know how I was going to ask yet, but we ended up taking a non-planned trip to LA to attend our favorite church (Grace Community Church) and they got us two rooms in the very same hotel that we met in during Idol! It was just meant to be that moment, I knew it! So I coordinated with my good friend and personal pastor Michael Mahoney and we constructed a plan to make it as magical as possible.

MIW: Your new single “Baby Let’s Do This” is about to drop. Tell our readers more about what this song means to you and how you feel about Gabby.

Cade: This song is such an expression of both Gabby’s and my heart over the past year. We have traveled constantly and usually apart. Thus, we would have these midnight conversations of “Okay, I’m coming to get you and we’re just gonna go get married. This is absolutely unbearable.” And in light of all those thoughts and wants that are still going on to this day, this song when I heard it and was able to start working on it – it was just a “WOW” moment. I can’t believe I got a song that is such an accurate ballad of my confession to my soon-to-be bride.

MIW: Who wrote the song and why did you choose it as your next single?

Cade: The song was written by Jim Collins (“Big green tractor” “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” and “It Just Comes Natural”) and Spence Peppard. I jumped at the idea to release it because it only took a few tweaks of my personal story with Gabby to have something that was a representation of exactly how we felt. I was also able to get Gabby in the music video so it would be something really special that we could always look back on!

MIW: What was it like shooting the music video for “Baby Let’s Do This” with Gabby?

Cade: My thought was, “I can’t believe I get to have Gabby Barrett in my music video!” She is the biggest star in the world to me and to think she would want to spend two full days with me doing more work just makes me the happiest, and to be sure, the most blessed man.

MIW: Be honest, who wears the pants in the relationship?

Cade: Well hahaha, being the man according to the Bible is to lead and metaphorically “wear the pants.” And it’s a great joy in my life to take care of such a great treasure that’s been entrusted to me!

MIW: On a more serious note, it’s no secret that faith plays a big role in the way you and Gabby live out your lives. How do you plan to remain focused and balanced in such a crazy industry that isn’t necessarily the easiest place to stay centered?

Cade:  Remembering The Gospel. That Christ bled and died on behalf of all who would believe upon Him. This is the fuel that drives us to know our music has a purpose of use to God and we are to be good stewards of the graces given.

Music Industry Weekly – Cade Foehner and Gabby Barrett

MIW: The news media shows that you and Gabby are crazy busy with your own tours and working on projects. Do you have any plans in the near future to tour together or work on more projects together?

Cade: We do have high hopes of doing quite a bit together. Our voices compliment each other so we both know it would be a shame to not do music together! She is my favorite person in the world to sing with and my dream duet partner.

MIW: Can you tell us one thing about you that most people don’t already know?

Cade: That I’m a cowboy at heart. I love riding horses, taking care of cows, etc.

MIW: What advice would you give someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Cade: Make SURE you know WHY you are doing it. Namely, is your goal Christ and His Gospel being told to people ultimately through the talent He gave to you?

MIW: If you had to choose any other path in life other than being a touring and recording artist, what would it be and why?

Cade: A preacher. I have seen that to be one of the hardest yet most fulfilling life’s works in any human ever. I do get to preach from time to time, however, with music going on it’s difficult to schedule those things in.

MIW: How can our readers connect with you on social media, learn more about you, or stream/download your music and/or videos?

Cade:  They can connect with me on Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube.

Camila Cabello Releases Trippy New ‘Liar’ Music Video: Watch

Camila Cabello’s “Liar” music video will have your mind spinning. In the video, you will have a hard time figuring out what is real and what is fake. She is stuck in a dream-like state about confronting her rich, shallow boyfriend. After telling him the truth about how she really feels about him, there is a series of events that take place that causes her to die, wake up, and then dream again. Every time she tries to do things differently in the reoccurring dream, the end result is the same. The video is directed by Dave Meyers, and this particular song is the followup to Camila’s “Shameless,” and she’ll perform it Oct. 12 on Saturday Night Live.

Kevin Garrett Releases New Single “Factor In”

0
Kevin Garrett releases a new single called “Factor In,” following his latest album Hoax which was released earlier this year in March. Kevin’s songs are well known for his love life, or the lack there of. In this new single, he sings about attempting to let go of a toxic relationship, but fails because of the control she still has over his heart. Near the end of the song, he begins to chant “It’s a shame, it’s a shame, it’s the same thing,” capturing the cycle of trying to move on and forgetting, but failing because love is a trap. Kevin is currently supporting BANKS on tour. You can purchase tickets here.  Listen to “Factor In” below.

Global Pop Artist, Brianna Shelko Shares Why She ‘Doesn’t Want Your Man’ With New Single

Meet Brianna Shelko, a 25-year-old award-winning pop music artist outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Shelko adds to the very short list of artists who have proven that storytelling through songs can create fans from all over the world to come together for a common love—music. For those familiar with Shelko, she’s no stranger to the music industry. She was featured on her own episode on MTV for her work as a Christian pop artist. During the release of her music video, “Over It,” Shelko teamed up with award-winning movie director, Bill Rahn. Through her brand Bshelko Music and Art, she continues to help raise money for her budding music career, painting custom canvases, working as a DJ at weddings, as well as giving back to the music community teaching voice, guitar, and piano to young students. Shelko’s musical approach resembles the style artists like Shelita, Maddie Logan, and NBC’s “The Voice” Season 14 (Team Blake) Contestant, JessLee bring to the industry. If there’s anything that is evident, it’s that storytelling songs really do make a difference. Take JessLee’s recent single, “Over Him,” which is now over 150,000 streams since its release back in June, or Shelita’s new EP, “Special,” which has been downloaded more than 200,000 times and streamed more than 20 million times, reaching #10 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart in the Pacific. Reflecting upon personal experiences of love, struggle, and influence for inspiration, Shelko has been able to catapult her sound into the hands of radio stations across the world, most recently with her new single, “I Don’t Want Your Man.”

“I Don’t Want Your Man”

It all started with a random phone call from a blocked number,” the pop-artist shared with me.
Some girl called me up and questioned me about a relationship that never existed between myself and one of my exes. And I was sure to let her know right then and there, that I didn’t want her man.”
In telling her story to reporters, Shelko explained that this girl seemed to have been “blinded by jealousy,” but that wasn’t something she thought “women should ever feel,” […] “if he’s cheating, then leave. Let this be the theme song that helps connect women across nations to support and encourage one another, rather than dishing out on envy and hatred.” Music Industry Weekly sat down with Shelko to get a better understanding of why her passion for uniting all women together against hatred continues to burn in an already fragmented music industry. Andrew Rossow: What inspired you to first get into music? Brianna Shelko: That’s actually a funny question, because I’ve been inspired my entire life. I started writing songs when I was seven years old and haven’t stopped since. I received a little battery-operated keyboard when I was about eight, and I just kind of took off from there.  I will say though, when I was 15 I made history at a talent show—I was the only one who had ever won awards in every category. I literally stole the show. AR: Do you remember that first song you performed for the audience? BS:  Definitely. I played one of my original songs called, “If I Ever Lost You,” for the first time on the grand piano. It was just me, a piano, microphone and hundreds of people in the audience. I think after that night I realized I wanted to do this forever. I had received my very first standing ovation.

Overcoming a Judgmental and Competitive Industry

But like any artist, Shelko is no stranger to the struggles the pressures of writing, performing, and managing her brand have brought her. “I have faced challenges ranging from other artists attempting to steal my work, terrible managers, body shaming, and of course, rejection over and over again.”

‘If You’re a Cyberbully, You Suck’

Music Industry Weekly - Brianna Shelko
Music Industry Weekly – Brianna Shelko
In my conversation with Shelko, she recalled several times where she was victimized by online bullying.
“I’ve heard industry folk say that I HAVE to look a certain way if I want the attention it takes to ‘make it’—but I’m beautiful the way I am, and I think everyone is beautiful in their own way. Plus, any animosity I face, I always end up writing a song about it. That’s how I work through and process things—I just turn it into music and it feels like it’s been transformed into something positive.”

Brianna’s 3 Tips for Fighting Online Bullying

I invited Shelko to join my anti-cyberbullying movement, #CYBERBYTE, which a number of Hollywood artists, musicians, actors/actresses, and record producers have already joined, including Logan. <embed video = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0U7mSzaR7c&feature=youtu.be

No Rest for The Wicked

In our last piece, we interviewed Hip-Hop/R&B record producer, James Worthy, who having been in the industry since he was seventeen-years-old, has been on the other side of entertainment, producing tracks for renown artists such as Fetty Wap. 6lack, T-Pain, Truth Hurts, Robin S, and Tony Terry.  But, what advice does a musician like Shelko have for others who may have experienced similar challenges in the industry?
“My advice would be to find a mentor who has already done it. Take it from someone who knows, someone who has struggled to get where they are today. And learn as much as you possibly can from them. And if you don’t know anyone, do as much research as possible on what is trending and what other artists who are making a bigger doing. Leverage social media to the fullest capacity and make sure that your content is quality content and is posted frequently.”

Using the Right Social Media Platform for the Right Reasons

Post with a purpose. If you have a brand you are managing, then that is the only rule you need to ensure you follow…to the tee. AR: How do you utilize social media to help engage with your community and increase your brand awareness? BS: Any update, show, and/or award—anything that is going on in my life, I update my social media audience! AR: What is your platform of choice? BS: I use each platform for a different purpose. For example, I use Instagram for photo-shoot engagement, while Facebook serves to inform my audience on big news updates and live videos. My YouTube channel is for professional music videos and quality-video content, while my LinkedIn page is solely for networking and meeting industry professionals who can always help me advance into the next stages of my career. And of course, I always check Twitter for the latest trends and relevant media. The latest single is scheduled to release digitally on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Music, Google Play and many other platforms soon (TBD).

X Factor Contestant and Music Industry Phenom CeCe Frey Releases New Single “Little Hell”

0
“Born a farmer’s daughter in a small town in Illinois, CeCe is no stranger to hard work and dedication. She began singing at the age of 5 and hasn’t stopped for a day since.  It wasn’t long after joining her first band that her drive caught the attention of the casting producers of Simon Cowell’s “X Factor USA”. After years of singing in dive bars and sleeping in minivans, her drive was taking her places far greater and far tougher than small-town Illinois.  The values of hard work and dedication she had gained made themselves apparent almost immediately. From the second she hit national television, her “girl boss” personality got her pegged as the most polarizing character in competition show history, but it was her talent that earned her a spot a finalist next to her friends, Fifth Harmony. Even after finishing in 6th place, CeCe garnered more social media following than the winner that season. When the dust settled, CeCe continued to make her mark on the industry. She honed her craft as a songwriter and then ventured into creative direction and costume design for other artists as well as herself. In 2018, she started her entertainment company, Good Wolf Entertainment, where she directs, edits, and produces music videos. From the virtues she gained from her rural home, she has formed herself into a self-sufficient creative powerhouse in every aspect.  Now with the completion of her debut record, you can hear the catharsis in every stomp, clap, and rasp in her powerhouse voice.” We sat down with CeCe to find out what’s been going on with her latest single “Little Hell” and dug a little deeper to find out what makes this mysterious and iconic artist tick.

MIW: You’ve been quite busy since your television debut on season 2 of The X Factor. Can you tell us how you transitioned into also becoming a music industry mogul and the inspiration behind starting Good Wolf Entertainment?   CeCe: “Busy” is definitely the nice word for it. Most of the time it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day. But I don’t know how to be anything but busy! When I started in this industry I was always doing everything myself out of necessity- planning my own shoots, making my own clothes, and building my own visuals to pair with my music. Then other artists and friends started reaching out to me to do the same for them. So I started Good Wolf Entertainment with Chase Stockman as the umbrella company for all of my creative ventures. I have been producing and creative directing music videos and photoshoots since I started in this business almost ten years ago. Then over the last year, I moved into directing which is definitely my second love after music. So Good Wolf just seemed like the most natural next step. I plan to continue directing music videos and one day film as well. But music is definitely my number one priority. MIW: How did you get the attention of the casting producers of the X Factor?   CeCe: The producers of the X Factor found me on YouTube and asked me to audition. I wasn’t even going to do it at first. I kept thinking to myself, “I am a real artist and songwriter. I am not going to risk not being taken seriously just to be on TV. I’ll make it on my own.” But I grew up in a very small town in Illinois. The kind of town that many people don’t ever make it out of. So, I came home from work one day, (I was working two jobs at the time) and I just said “F*ck it, what do I have to lose?” And I sent in my tape to the producers. MIW: What was your life like after going on The X Factor? How has it been different after finishing 6th place with millions of fans rooting you on? CeCe:  Well, I currently live in Los Angeles and I am making art on a daily basis. It’s not easy. I still struggle in new ways every week, but I am a step closer to my dreams every single day. I appreciate the struggle because struggle will always be more inspiring than “easy”. And I’m even more appreciative to the Warriors that have stuck around to support me for the last 7 years since the show.
Music Industry Weekly - CeCe Frey
Music Industry Weekly – CeCe Frey
MIW: You are definitely one of the most memorable contestants on the X Factor due to your “girl boss” personality and flair for the unusual. Where does that confidence come from?  CeCe: Haha, again, “memorable” is the nice way to put it. I remember a headline once called me “one of the most polarizing characters on television”. Let’s face it- when you have an over the top personality, that makes for reality TV gold.  The producers and editors had very clever tricks to twist things and make me look like a bitch. To be honest, my friends think I’m hilarious- but anytime you take what people say out of context, you can make them come off however you want. Am I over the top? Absolutely. Am I a “girl boss”? Not quite. I am a boss. Period. I just happen to be a woman as well- and a fierce one at that.  Sometimes that will annoy people that are intimidated by it or that don’t have the same sense of self. But I am a loyal friend and I love people fiercely and wholly. I am proud of who I am and what I have overcome in my life, and that’s where the confidence comes from. I don’t think I would still be standing, chasing this dream if I didn’t whole-heartedly believe in myself. That doesn’t mean I don’t have days that are riddled with self-doubt. But I hope I can continue to inspire people with my “polarizing” personality that they don’t have to stay down when they are pushed. Get up. Dust off. Kick more ass. End of story. MIW: Your army of loyal fans are known as “Warriors.” Can you tell us how that came about? CeCe: Honestly, I don’t even know. I just remember one day seeing tweets and comments of people saying, “We need a fandom name!” and I thought “Wait, whose fandom? MINE?!” I couldn’t even believe it. I guess they came up with “Warriors” because that’s what I am. A warrior of life. And I love my tribe. MIW: Starting at the young age of five, you obviously had a love for music growing up. At what point did you realize that you wanted to be a singer or artist? CeCe: I was always singing to the Pocahontas soundtrack in our house growing up, but the first time I sang in front of people was my Kindergarten talent show. I made my mom hold the microphone for me and I sang “Jesus Loves Me”. And I remember this overwhelming feeling like, “This is it. This is what I’m gonna be when I grow up”. And from then on when anyone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said “A singer and a mom”. Haha- I’m going to hold off on the “mom” part for a while.
Music Industry Weekly - CeCe Frey
Music Industry Weekly – CeCe Frey
MIW: Do you have any other hidden hobbies or talents outside of the music and film industries?  CeCe: Yes, obviously fashion is very close to my heart. Most of the things I wear on stage or in my videos I have either made from scratch or customized in some way. I love creating all different forms of self-expression and art, and fashion is literally wearable art. It all ties in together for me. MIW: What is your favorite part about the music industry? Your least favorite? Why? CeCe: Honestly- It’s a double-edged sword. I do not like the “industry” side of music. It feels almost dirty to me the way art and artists are bought and sold. A&R’s tell us our songs aren’t “accessible” enough, or our social media numbers aren’t high enough, or that our fanbase in Iowa isn’t big enough and we should be tweeting more, or we should be posting more selfies to boost engagement. It’s all bullshit. But in the same way, if you’re lucky,  it’s the only way we can make a living doing what we love to do- what we’re meant to do. We get to create. We get to be heard. We get to make a difference. And that’s why it’s the best and the worst job in the world. MIW: What advice would you give someone wanting to follow in your footsteps? CeCe: Don’t. – Don’t follow in my footsteps. Create your own. But whatever you do, don’t stop. Keep taking those footsteps until you get where you’re going. There is no such thing as luck. Just those that give up sooner than others. MIW: If you had to choose between being an artist, fashion designer, or music industry executive, which one would you choose and why? CeCe: Artist. Hands down. Music is my first love and always will be. But the beautiful thing is, that choice isn’t real. I can and will be whatever I want. And I plan to do it all. MIW: What can our readers and your existing fanbase expect to see from you musically in the near future?  CeCe: I have new singles coming out through the end of the year and then I have an album coming out next year! MIW: What can you tell us about your latest music project? CeCe: The best word I have for it is “cathartic”. This record was such a release for me to make and you can really hear that catharsis in my voice and the writing of these songs. I’m super proud of this project and I’m already working on album #2. I recently finished the music video for “Never Be” and my latest single “Litle Hell” just dropped. There are many more to come soon! MIW: Where will you be performing next? CeCe: I’m not sure at the moment, my primary focus is getting the music OUT and planning all the visuals that will go with it. I’ll start doing shows again next year unless a tour comes up before then.
