The Six-Stringed Warrior: Remembering Jeff Beck a Music Industry Weekly Exclusive

The music industry was left in mourning as the news of the passing of guitar legend Jeff Beck on Tuesday at the age of 78 spread. Beck’s exceptional talent as a musician has left an indelible mark on the industry, and his peers and fellow musicians have flocked to social media to pay their respects. Gene Simmons, for instance, tweeted, “No one played guitar like Jeff. I urge all music lovers to listen to the first two albums of The Jeff Beck Group and experience true greatness.” Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, Dave Davies of The Kinks, Steve Hackett of Genesis, and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin also shared their condolences, with Page describing Beck as a “six-stringed Warrior” who had the ability to “channel music from the ethereal.”

For me, the memory of Jeff Beck’s music is inextricably linked to the first time I saw him play live. It was at a small club in London, and I had been a huge fan of his for years, but I had never had the opportunity to see him perform in person. As soon as he stepped on stage, I knew I was in for something special. The way he approached the guitar was unlike anything I had ever seen before. He had a fluidity and a grace that was mesmerizing, and every note he played seemed to carry a deep emotional weight. I remember being particularly struck by the way he used his fingers to create different textures and tones, and the way he could make the guitar sing and cry.

As the night went on, I found myself completely absorbed in the music. Beck was playing a mix of his own songs and covers, and each one was infused with his unique style. Black Sheep Files Class Action Lawsuit Against UMG for Unpaid Royalties – Music Industry Weekly News

On Wednesday, January 4th, hip hop duo Black Sheep filed a class action lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), alleging that the record label owes them and other artists approximately $750 million in unpaid royalties. The lawsuit claims that UMG agreed to accept lower royalty rates from streaming service Spotify in exchange for equity shares in the company back in 2008. 

Black Sheep argue that their contracts entitled them to 50% of royalties from Spotify and 5% of UMG’s Spotify equity, due to a clause in their contracts concerning “net receipts.”

UMG has released a statement denying the allegations, calling them “patently false and absurd.” The label maintains that it has “a well-established track record of fighting for artist compensation.” In fact, Universal has publicly pledged to share proceeds from its Spotify equity with the artists on its roster if it ever sells it. 

According to the company’s annual report for investors, UMG owned a 3.37% stake in Spotify as of the end of 2021. This is lower than its reported share of just over 5% in 2008, which rose to 7% in 2018 following the acquisition of EMI, which held a 2% stake in the company. UMG’s shareholding in Spotify has decreased due to share dilutions caused by further investments.

Black Sheep, comprised of Andres Titus and William McLean, rose to fame in the early 90s with hits such as “The Choice Is Yours” from their 1991 album “A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing.” In other Spotify-related news, the streaming platform recently launched a new feature called “Playlist in a Bottle,” which allows users to create their own music time capsule to be opened in the future.

The lawsuit filed by Black Sheep against UMG sheds light on the ongoing issues surrounding royalty payments in the music industry. As streaming becomes an increasingly popular method of music consumption, artists and labels have had to navigate complicated royalty agreements.

BLACKPINK Breaks Record with Two Billion YouTube Views: Music Industry Weekly Update

K-pop sensation BLACKPINK has reached a major milestone with the music video for their hit single “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” surpassing two billion views on YouTube. This marks the first time a video from the all-female group has reached such high viewership, with other popular videos including “Kill This Love” (1.7 billion), “Boombayah” (1.5 billion), and “How You Like That” (1.1 billion). In addition, the group’s latest singles “Pink Venom” and “Shut Down” have gained hundreds of millions of views since their release.

“Ddu-Du Ddu-Du,” which was originally released in June 2018, combines bubblegum pop with a trap beat and features the group’s signature finger gun-waving choreography on the chorus. The accompanying music video quickly went viral and helped the single become BLACKPINK’s first entry on the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at No. 55. The single also earned the group their fourth No. 1 on the World Digital Song Sales chart.

BLACKPINK’s latest achievement comes on the heels of the release of their second studio album, Born Pink, and the start of their highly-anticipated world tour. 5 Steps to Music Publishing: A Lawyer’s Perspective

During my long career as an entertainment attorney in the music industry, one of the most common questions I received was about the process of music publishing. As an experienced professional in this field, I was able to guide my clients through the complex process of ensuring that their rights were protected, and their music was monetized to the fullest extent possible. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to publishing music, I worked with my clients to identify the specific steps that were necessary to achieve their goals. Now that I am semi-retired from the music biz, I often reflect on the valuable lessons I learned and the successful outcomes I was able to achieve for my clients during my time in the industry. I’d like to share 5 steps to music publishing that every producer and songwriter should know.

1. Copyright your songs.

The first and most important step in the music publishing process is to ensure that your songs are properly copyrighted. In the United States, copyright protection is automatic when you fix your song in a tangible form, such as by writing it down on paper or recording it on your phone. However, registering your copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office can provide additional legal protections and make it easier to enforce your rights in court if necessary.

Registering your song with a third-party registration service is a faster and cheaper way to protect your songs online. It’s simple and easy to do. One of the most reputable and well-established song registration services is VeriSong.com. Enrollment is free, and they also provide music placement services to their members.

2. Choose a music publishing company.

Once your songs are copyrighted, you will need to decide how you want to publish and distribute your music. One option is to sign with a traditional music publishing company, which will handle the licensing and distribution of your music in exchange for a percentage of the royalties. These companies often have relationships with music supervisors and other industry professionals, which can help you get your music placed in film, television, and other media.

One of my clients, an up-and-coming singer-songwriter, benefited greatly from having a music publishing company on her team. She had written several catchy and innovative songs but struggled to get them placed in film and television. By signing with a music publishing company, she was able to leverage their relationships with music supervisors and other industry professionals to get her music placed in a number of high-profile projects. This not only brought her music to a wider audience but also generated significant income through sync licensing fees and performance royalties. Without the support of a music publishing company, it is likely that my client’s music would not have received the exposure and monetization that it did.

3. Join a performing rights organization (PRO).

In addition to registering your songs with the copyright office or VeriSong and signing with a publishing company, you will also need to join a performing rights organization (PRO). PROs are responsible for collecting and distributing performance royalties on behalf of songwriters and music publishers. In the United States, the three major PROs are ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. By joining a PRO, you can ensure that you are paid for any public performances of your music, including when it is played on the radio or in a live venue.

I have seen firsthand the importance of registering with a performing rights organization (PRO) for songwriters who want to get paid. One day I received a call from a songwriter who had written a song that was featured on a popular television show. However, because he wasn’t registered with a PRO, he didn’t receive any performance royalties for the use of his song on the show. I was able to help him resolve the issue eventually, but it was a costly mistake. To ensure that they are being properly compensated for the use of their music, it is essential for songwriters to register with a PRO such as ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC. By doing so, they can ensure that they receive performance royalties for any public performances of their music, including when their song is played on the radio or in a live venue.

4. Protect your rights with contracts.

As you begin to license and distribute your music, it is important to protect your rights with contracts. This includes contracts with publishing companies, record labels, and any other parties involved in the distribution of your music. Be sure to have a lawyer review any contracts before signing them, as they can often be complex and may contain provisions that are not favorable to you.

I’ve have had the pleasure of helping many songwriters get paid for their hit songs through the use of well-crafted legal contracts. One particularly memorable example was a client who had written a song that was recorded by a major artist and released as a single. The song became a huge international hit, garnering billions of streams and radio play around the world. Due to the thorough contracts that were in place, my client was able to receive a significant portion of the song’s royalties worldwide, which provided a significant financial boost for his career. Without these contracts in place, my client may not have received the fair compensation that he deserved for his hard work and creativity. This highlights the importance of having a lawyer review and negotiate contracts in the music industry.

5. Monitor your royalty statements.

The final step in the music publishing process is to monitor your royalty statements to ensure that you are being properly paid for the use of your music. This can be a complex and time-consuming task, but it is essential to ensure that you are being fairly compensated for your work. If you are unsure how to interpret your royalty statements, consider hiring a lawyer or music industry professional to help you navigate the process.

I had a client who was a talented songwriter but struggled to collect publishing royalties due to disorganization. Despite having several songs that were being widely performed and recorded by other artists, my client had difficulty keeping track of which songs were being used and where they were being performed. This made it difficult for her to accurately monitor her royalty statements and identify any discrepancies. As a result, she was often underpaid or not paid at all for the use of her songs. By working with me to get her paperwork and records in order, my client could take control of her publishing royalties and ensure that she was properly compensated for her work. This underscores the importance of staying organized in the music industry, especially when it comes to tracking the use of your songs and collecting royalties

While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to publishing music, there are a few key steps that every producer and songwriter should follow to ensure that their rights are protected and that they are able to monetize their work fully.

UK Alt Rock Artist Jonny Lucas Teams Up With Parabolic Records to Connect With Fans in the Metaverse

UK alternative rock artist Jonny Lucas has gained significant momentum in the real world over the past year garnering over a million streams on Spotify and hitting the airwaves on both US and UK radio stations. 

Jonny recently partnered with Parabolic Records to shoot a 360 live video for his single “Buried in this Life” from his upcoming EP Out of the Ordinary (set to be released April 15th). The video shoot took place at Arch Audio Recording Studio in Chattanooga, TN with Parabolic Records’ Co-Founder Mark Hutchinson at the helm of his studio’s state of the art Neve Genesys Black console to capture a live recording of Jonny’s stellar performance. The video will be released on YouTube and on other social media platforms that support 360 videos shortly after the drop of his single in April.

Following the 360 Video shoot at Arch, the team at Parabolic Records immediately went to work on Jonny’s next video “Out of the Ordinary” (set to be released on July 8) which is also the title track for his EP. The video concept was a collaborative effort between Parabolic Records’ Co-Founder Chris “Shmiddy” Schmidt and Jonny. With the music video concept in hand, Shmiddy called on his longtime friend Scott Hansen of Digital Thunderdome to produce and direct the video. Scott is an award winning producer and director with over 600 music videos (Corey Taylor, Yela Wolf, ADTR, Sevendust, Motionless in White, Willie Nelson, Animals As Leaders, Mayday Parade, Darkest Hour, White Chapel, Wu Tang Clan) and eight feature films under his belt. The music video production date is scheduled for March 14th and will be filmed in Atlanta, GA.

Jonny Lucas: Music Industry Weekly’s Artist On The Rise

In our new “Artist on the Rise” series, Music Industry Weekly will be highlighting artists that have gained a lot of momentum in their careers. The UK born Alternative artist Jonny Lucas is someone we’ve been watching for quite some time now. He has been featured in several publications over the past several years due to his impressive continued success as an independent recording artist (including two MIW articles in October 2020 and May 2021. The 2021 follow up article by MIW was set in motion after our Editorial Team noticed that Jonny had reached over one million streams on Spotify in just a few short months.

The end of 2021 marked the beginning of Jonny’s next big step in taking his music career to new heights. His single “Don’t You” caught the attention of Parabolic Records, a new independent record label looking to partner with up and coming artists. The song was written and produced by Jonny and co-written by English singer, producer and songwriter Roger Cook. Roger is best known for co-writing hit songs such as “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” by The New Seekers (that became part of American pop-culture when it was used in a Coke commercial). He also co-wrote “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress” by The Hollies, along with a string of other hits recognized around the world. Roger became the first British songwriter to enter the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Jonny continues to regularly write with Roger and recently inked a deal with an agent to handle his song placements in film and television.

Most people will agree that the past two years have been anything but ordinary. Jonny’s continued upward trajectory during these difficult times has been somewhat out of the ordinary as well. Like most artists, his live events took a back seat to restricted venus and cancelled shows. The silver lining was that he was able to spend day and night in his recording studio Round Corner Studios doing what he loves, which is writing and producing music. Jonny ended up releasing 12 songs that broke 1 million streams on Spotify. As he continued to write and produce, he created some of the best songs the has written to date. Scott is a well respected award winning music video producer and director, and is scheduled to produce and direct Jonny’s single “Out of the Ordinary” using Parabolic Record’s 360 video technology. The video will engage viewers in a fully immersive Virtual Reality environment and promises to provide music lovers with a unique experience.
